Famous inventor, Thomas Edison, long ago spoke on the correlation between focus and success, saying if people “took the time…and applied it in one direction, to one object, they would succeed. The trouble lies in the fact that people do not have an object, one thing, to which they stick, letting all else go.”
So, in today’s world filled with multiple, competing priorities and numerous devices seeking our attention, what to do? Luckily, there are many adjustments to make and practices to adopt to help us improve focus and concentration. Here are a few strategies to get started:
Choose an Anchor Task – “Assign one (and only one) priority to each workday.” Make this a non-negotiable task that must get done in the day. You will likely be called away to handle other time-sensitive tasks but then return to this anchor task. This model can provide an organizational structure to your day.
Work in Full-Screen Mode – Remove all the on-screen distractions like email alerts, the time and other application icons, thus removing the temptation to move on to something else.
Do the Most Important Thing First – Establish what is most important to accomplish in your day and then do that first, before new or urgent priorities creep in.
