Meet with Intent

Sep 8, 2020 | SMART.remark

Oprah… She has built a media, entertainment, and philanthropic empire over her career, so it is safe to say she knows a thing or two about leading successful meetings. To ensure every meeting is productive and stays on target, she starts with these 3 questions:

  1. What is our intention for this meeting?
  2. What’s important?
  3. What matters?”

Clarity.  Focus.  She gets things done by clearly defining intentions for the meeting and then sticking to those intentions.  We are all busy, and meetings can be a time suck if not run with clarity and focus.  This applies to us all, whether planning and running the meeting or as an attendee, we all play a part in ensuring a meeting delivers intended results.  Additional advice is shared in the linked article, including:

  • Information – Share it ahead of time.  Spending valuable meeting time to review new information is a waste of expensive time.  Send it out ahead for all to review and, as an attendee, review it and come prepared.
  • Outcome – Effective meetings result in decisions: What, When, Who.  They then go further to also establish clear direction and accountability.

What can you do to help your next meeting deliver on intention?
