Linux Engineer

Smart Solutions is searching for a go-getter Linux Engineer for a remote opportunity. This opportunity is a contract-to-hire position responsible for controlling, monitoring, and interconnecting equipment to manufacture electrostatic ion beam accelerator systems. The ideal person for this role has safe work habits, pays attention to detail, is accurate, and has good attendance. He or she should also be able to collaborate well with others. This role’s office environment is excellent, and the candidate for this role can be a junior or experienced professional. However, the right person needs to be strong and passionate about Linux. The schedule for this role is Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. CST. 

Essential Duties:
  • Set up and configure control system computers and equipment
    • Install Linux operating system
    • Administer/configure Linux (such as networking, firewall, users)
    • Generate new database entries and configuration files for unique systems
    • Modify/upgrade existing databases and configuration files
  • Commission and troubleshoot control systems
    • Test I/O system functionality
    • Diagnose wiring errors and other defects
    • Verify software configuration, including safety interlocks
  • Provide customer training and support (email/phone) 
  • Write small programs/scripts to augment the existing control system for customer needs 
  • Perform on-site installation, testing, and training at locations around the world 
  • Assist in the development of electronics that will interface with our products 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (computer science, electrical engineering, or others)
  • Proficiency in Linux operating system and administration (RHEL, CentOS, and more)
  • SQL database experience (ability to run some basic SQL queries, updates, delete, and more) 
  • Proficiency in programming (C, C++, TCL, and Python)
  • Experience in analog and digital circuitry
  • High attention to detail
  • Hands-on mentality
  • Available to travel internationally
  • Above average ability to read and write in English
Physical Requirements:
  • Manual dexterity
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds, bend, crouch, squat, twist, and reach overhead
  • Eyesight vision of, or corrected to, 20/20
Desired Skills: 
  • Electronics knowledge or background (basic electronics knowledge like oscilloscope, Ohms Law, or Multi-meter dimensional)
  • Mainframe C programming language
